IT WAS no good. Andrew had to go buy clothes.

He always resented spending money on clothes. He wasn’t in the least fashion conscious, always preferring to go with what felt comfortable instead of buying the latest labels. But having to spend money on work clothes was the worst.

He surveyed the contents of his wardrobe with a grimace. He needed a new suit, and definitely some shirts. The thing was, he didn’t know the city center shops well enough to know where to go for something suitable.

Oh, to hell with it. I’ll go for a wander down Market Street and pray something leaps out at me.

Which was how he came to be walking along the main pedestrianized street, gazing into all the shop windows, when a window display caught his eye. The mannequin wore a sleek, smart gray suit that breathed professionalism to Andrew in no uncertain terms. He glanced up to find himself standing in front of Debenhams, one of the city’s few department stores. Smiling gleefully, he pushed through the main door and onto the busy shop floor.

Oh God. Something else I hate about shopping—the crowds.

Yeah, maybe Saturday afternoon wasn’t the wisest time to brave the city streets, but it was too late now. Andrew was a man on a mission—find one suit, three or four shirts, and then get the hell out of there and back to the safety of his little flat, to chill out before Bliss. He located the store guide, after searching for it in vain for several minutes, and then took the escalator to the second floor to the menswear department.

There were substantially fewer customers milling around, much to his relief. After looking at the price tags of a couple of suits and nearly having a heart attack, he found what he was looking for, a smart range of suits at a price he could afford. He spent about thirty minutes in front of mirrors, trying on jackets, unwilling to go to the changing rooms and go through the tiring process of trying on the whole thing. He wore a standard size when it came to pants, but the jacket had to look the part, no wrinkles or puckers when fastened. At last he decided on a dark gray suit in a smooth, expensive-looking fabric, which was on sale.

Thank God for year-round sales.

Finding shirts was less problematic, and he quickly located four shirts in different colors that were 100 percent cotton. Excellent. He took his items to the nearest cash desk and paid for them, and it was only as he was about to take the escalator down that he had a brainwave.

How about a really smart tie? His finances could run to a few well-chosen ties.

After a few moments of searching, he spotted a wall rack of ties, tucked away in the corner. Bingo. As he walked over to the display, his face cracked into a huge smile as he saw the sales assistant. It was Gareth, dressed in a white shirt, red tie, and black pants.
